I usually don’t like to post about doing standup comedy, but here’s something!
I just did the open mic at the Silverlake Lounge. Because I went on later in the evening there were only about twelve people in the audience. I decided to do some old material. Some of it went over well. Most of it didn’t. My last joke was a real turd.
That’s fine. It’s the nature of the beast. Nothing is really at stake at an open mic.
The host came back on stage. ”Give it up for Paul Isakson! [A smattering of applause.] Okay, folks! Here’s a special treat; MARIA BAMFORD!”
Maria Bamford took the stage and comedied the shit out of the place. Turns out I was opening for Maria Bamford.
There’s nothing like the feeling of being garbage in front of somebody who you admire. I feel like a dumb dork. I’m now consoling myself with a 7-11 egg salad sandwich.
